Pennine Way Part 2

Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall during the section that the Pennine Way parallels

I would say that the northern half of the Pennine Way is more remote than the southern, but for me it did not feel like it, as I acquired a walking partner for (most of) 5 of the 9 days on this section.  Still, it was in this top half that I finally succumbed to the dreaded bog, got lost in fog/mist on more than one occasion, met a lot more other people walking the trail (and reconnected with some I had met previously), arrived at my destination within half a day’s walk on many days, and experienced much cooler temperatures than in the southern sections.

I had walked Part 1 of the Pennine Way (click HERE to read about those sections) over 7 days before detouring for 4 nights in Reeth.

After doing my 3-day compass use and map reading course in Reeth, I walked back over to Keld to continue with the Pennine Way.  You can read about any section you are interested in by clicking on the relevant link below, or just start with Day 8 and go from there.

Day 8 Reeth to Tan Hill: Where I wander to an elevated pub but end in madness

Day 9 Tan Hill to Middleton-in-Teesdale: A short walk to a place with a long name

Day 10 Middleton-in-Teesdale to Dufton: During which I make a friend and soil my shorts

Day 11 Dufton to Alston: Where Robin and I get surrounded by mist, again

Day 12 Alston to Haltwhistle: During which the purists would hate me

Day 13 Haltwhistle to Bellingham: Where we join Hadrian’s Wall, at least momentarily

Day 14 Bellingham to Byrness: A roam through a lot of pine forest

Day 15 Byrness: Where I walk rapidly for half a day and then get rather chilly waiting

Day 16 Byrness to Kirk Yetholm: Where I walk rapidly for another half a day
