Pennine Way Day 12

Wednesday 4th September 2019 Haltwhistle

After porridge for breakfast I met Robin at 8:30 and we chose to deviate from the Pennine Way by walking the South Tyne Trail instead.  We had heard that the section of the Pennine Way (from Alston to Greenhead) was notorious for being the boggiest of all the sections.  The South Tyne Trail was along an old railway line, and we managed 16km in 3 hours on our way to Lambley.

At the Lambley viaduct Robin left me to walk some roads over to Greenhead (where he was staying for the night) while I continued along the South Tyne Trail to Haltwhistle, where I purchased some boiled sweets.

Then I continued on up almost to Hadrian’s Wall (as my B&B was pretty much right on the wall and was right on the Pennine Way).  So, I had cut the “Greenhead corner” off the Pennine Way.  No more purist me.

It was only 2 p.m. and raining so I sat in a pub all afternoon and read, eventually eating fish pie and then rhubarb and gooseberry crumble for dinner.  Then it was a short walk up the road to the B&B where a pair of replacement boots awaited me (as one pair I had been wearing earlier in the holiday fell apart and the company sent me a new pair under warranty).

After a shower it was a relaxing evening.
