Lady Anne's Way 2019 Day 5

Thursday 17th October 2019

Today was a day of muck and mud.  But, before we get there, here are some photos of the first stretch.

Didn't I take a photo of this lass last time I was here?

I revisited Brough Castle, and could not say “no” to the rhubarb sorbet from their tea room – Yum!

Some random trail shots...

I attempted to visit the castle in Appleby, now that it is open to the public, but it was closed for the day.  Despite this, I still tried walking up the driveway to catch a glimpse but was thwarted from getting close by a fence and gate.

In Appleby I wandered into a local sweet shop to ask the owner about a lolly (sweet) I used to get as a kid.  I’ve always thought they were called Milk Gums, but he said locally they are called Milk Chews and, unfortunately, are so popular they sell out almost immediately whenever he receives stock.  I have recently found something that is a bit similar, called Drumsticks, but they are smaller (I think) and multi-flavoured (instead of just vanilla).

On my way out of Appleby I was amused yet again by the door in the cliff.  I wonder if there is something like Narnia on the other side.

Onward to Long Marton and through the muckiest section ever; An especially bad section alongside a pond in which lives what seems to be a thousand ducks!  I must have been too busy attempting to negotiate it to bother with any photos, but it was mucky!  I have a photo of the duck pond in my 2015 walk's blog, but it doesn't show the path, and certainly wouldn't indicate the level to which it had deteriorated in the space of 4 years.

I stayed in the same place I had on the previous visit, and went to the same pub which, this time, had a group of locals in that decided blocking all routes of access to the bar and through the pub was the friendliest thing to do!  Anyway, I ordered some meal (I forget what now) that came with pudding, but I think I was forgotten about as the pudding didn’t arrive until a long time after finishing the meal.
