South West Coastal Path 2015 Day 3
Thursday 27th August 2015
I had Welsh rarebit for breakfast, which I had
never tried before (or since, come to think of it) and it was scrummy.
The trail zigzagged up a cliff to the sister
village of Lynton. I could have taken a
tramcar up, had I the patience to wait for it, but the brisk climb was exactly
what I needed to get me going. It began
to rain, and I saw a guy kicking a small dog.
Not exactly the kind of advertising the locals would want for tourists.
Into the Valley of Rocks, and I was a little
underwhelmed. I guess the name conjured
some vast idea of a large valley with overhanging rocks, but it wasn’t to
be. Also, there was a picture in my
guidebook that showed the most impressive part, Castle Rock, and there wasn’t
much more.
Unfortunately, I was a little too early for the Lee Abbey Tea Cottage, so the devil was still looming.
Later, in hindsight, I realised I should have
gone to Heddon’s Mouth beach, but with the weather, my ankle, and having just
navigated a tricky part (for me, as I was a bit wary of the high, treacherous
bits, which I later became quite used to) I only saw it from above. I did see the valley though as I had to walk through it.
Much of the Trentishoe Down/Holdstone Hill portion was akin to walking shallow creek beds.
It was a muddy descent into Combe Martin and then dinner was 2 pints of cider and a seafood platter.
The B&B was rather odd as the bedroom and shower were obviously used by the family, so it felt a little too personal.
