Shropshire Hills 2019 Part 1 Day 3
Wednesday
31st July 2019
After
wandering to the co-op in Church Stretton to get some food supplies, I decided
to tackle the steep southern ascent to Caer Caradoc. My fitness levels certainly had not improved
a lot yet, despite having been walking (or sitting and reading) for a week
already. When I reached the summit, I
decided that this time, with the aid of the View Ranger navigation app, that I
would finally find the cave. After about
10 minutes of moving back and forward and estimating that the app could have my
position incorrect by up to 200 metres or more, I did eventually find it. And here I was, thinking it was a myth put on
the maps as a joke.
I dropped
off the northern end and down over Little Caradoc and then up and over the
Lawley, from south to north. The last
time I was on the top of the Lawley, there was a cloud of flies that one had to
swim through because they were at a narrow point on the ridge. This time there was a wind and no sign of
flies. I munched on a sandwich as I
walked, turning right down to the road and then combining a mix of road walking
and footpaths to make my way over to Cardington. Along Hoar Edge is where I took this photo. I’ve taken a photo of this old railcar
before, so it will be interesting to me to compare if there has been much
weathering in the years since.
At
Cardington I decided to stop at the pub and have a second lunch – I am half
hobbit, don’t you know? Afterward, I
walked the fields and farm tracks back to Church Stretton, passing Caer Caradoc again, and by what
might be Cwms Cottage.
Upon reaching
Church Stretton I continued around back to the bunkhouse in All Stretton where
I spent the remainder of the afternoon reading.
