Lady Anne's Way 2019 Day 4
Wednesday 16th October 2019
Out of the bunkhouse and along the roads to reconnect with the trail. Last time around here a small flock of sheep became my entourage, but today I didn't see them. After another short stretch of road walking came a steep ascent.
The first half of today’s section includes some great views from a long, elevated section (I think called Lady Anne's Highway). At least, that is what my memory tells me; the drizzly mist that hung in the air blocked all of those from me today, as I didn't take any photos along this stretch. It was also along here 4 years ago that I encountered a farmer who was in shock that I was striding along in shorts and short-sleeved shirt while he was bundled up in winter clothes riding his quad bike. It was a short day's walk; I don’t recall it being this short the last time, but then again, I did walk further last time, as my day's destination's accommodation was a few kilometres off-route the last time.
I stopped at Pendragon Castle again, this time
the field allowed public entry, so I was able to get up close and personal with
it. Comparing the pictures with the ones I took 4 years previous, it seems to have collapsed considerably in a short time.
I arrived in Kirkby Stephen around 2 and decided to do some laundry in the only laundromat available, which ended up costing me £12 in total (including purchasing soap and using both a washing machine and a dryer)!! I purchased 2 pizzas and ice cream from the co-op for dinner and ate it at the hostel (which is an old church). There didn't seem to be any heat on, as it was rather chilly sitting alone in the big, high-ceilinged, area for dining. I had stayed at this hostel during my Coast to Coast walk two weeks prior, but either it wasn’t here when I first walked Lady Anne’s Way in 2015, or I did not know about it. This time there were other occupants in the hostel who arrived after I had gone to bed, making lots of noise and turning on lights.
