Coast to Coast Day 7
Saturday 5th October 2019 Brompton-on-Swale
Who said you need to stick exactly to a trail? Um, every purist I've had a conversation with. But both the pragmatist in me, and Wainwright's assurance that I can make this "my" coast to coast, helped me take any route I wanted.
Everything was wet. Not only the ground, the air and the sky, but my boots were not quite fully dry from yesterday. Consequently, I chose to avoid most of Wainwright’s suggested route today, and the wet grass it passed through, and I walked mostly roads for the section from Reeth to Richmond.
I arrived in Richmond around 11 and did a little shopping (getting the latest Amanda Owen book for Dad for Christmas). Walking through Richmond I reconnected for a short distance with the "recommended" route. I then went to The Station, which was a railway station once but is now a centre for food, film and art, to see a movie at the small movie theatre.
Another 5km walk later, I was in Brompton-on-Swale (on the opposite side of the river from the “official” route) where I was given a caravan to sleep in for the night as the bunk-barn was rented out by a group. I wandered a fair distance to find a pub for Wi-Fi and dinner. I was awake much of the night due to the rain coming down on the caravan roof. Not that I minded in the slightest.
