Borders Abbeys Way 2019 Day 4

Friday 13th September Galashiels to Kelso

I left Gala around 8 and was in Melrose just after 9.  Melrose Abbey was not open yet, and I didn’t want to linger, so I took a few shots of it from outside the walls and carried on.

The next stop was Dryburgh Abbey, and they charged an entrance fee, but I could not see what the abbey looked like as it was hidden amongst the trees, so I was unsure if the entrance fee was worth it.  I made the decision not to enter (and now, later, kind of wish I had looked as now I am curious as to what it looks like, although a quick google search kind of gives it away).

Much of the day was river-side walking, I recall (as I did not write about it).

I arrived in Kelso mid afternoon and checked out the (very small) abbey ruins.  It was the third abbey of the day (and there are only 4 in total for the, recommended, 5-day, circuit!).

Calculating my time and distance walked today, I did 37km in 6.5 hours.  Crazy fast.

I found my place to stay and had trouble entering (it had a key code, which I could not get, but there was a backup system).  I had planned on paying cash for my stay, but the place was unattended.  Originally I had to provide a credit card to reserve the place, but I don’t remember a charge ever coming through on it.  Did I get a night’s free accommodation?  I wandered out to buy pizza, which I ended up eating in my room.
