South West Coastal Path 2015 Day 31
Thursday 24th September 2015
I was away at 8:50.
2 hours after starting out I arrived at the Erme estuary (so much for a 3-hour walk). The tide was coming in, but there were still stretches of sand for most of the way across. I took off my boots and waded into the river flow, testing to see how deep it got. It only came to my knees! I wandered over without a problem. It was a great sense of accomplishment and saved me £30-odd in a taxi fare.
The sense of euphoria lasted about an hour and a half until I encountered some walkers going in the other direction that informed me the ferry I needed to catch the next morning had ceased operations for the season. It was supposed to operate until month’s end.
I got to Bigbury-on-Sea before 1, so continued to see where the ferry crossing should be, just to be sure. There was no boat going back and forth.
Back to Bigbury-on-Sea to sit by the ocean for a couple
of hours, then, as there was nowhere suitable to eat here, I walked back along
the coastal path to Challaborough (yep, backtracking) to buy fish ‘n’ chips.
