St. Cuthbert's Way 2019 Day 4

Tuesday 17th September Wooler to West Mains

Today included a ton of road walking.  I saw a giant St. Cuthbert’s wooden statue at one point.

Shortly thereafter I encountered St. Cuthbert’s cave, where I sat and ate lunch, and took way too many photos.

Just after I climbed the rise behind the cave I got my first view of the sea, and those long views out over the coast.

A cow's picnic?

Nearing the road to Holy Island, I made a railway crossing where I had to use a phone to call to check that there were no trains expected in the next few minutes, as they go through here at such a high rate of speed.

I didn’t go out to the causeway yet, but turned back inland to West Mains, where I had booked to stay 2 nights at the bunkhouse there.

It wasn’t open yet, so I hit the nearby pub to nurse a cider for 3 hours.  Later I purchased a “ready meal” from the local petrol station along with a bottle of wine and sat watching a DVD of a bad movie (provided in the bunkhouse) while eating.  Another resident showed up, Josh, an American living in England (who reminded me a lot of Luke, a guy I've worked with in Canada), so I did not have the room to myself this night.
