Lady Anne's Way 2015 Day 3

Monday 12th October 2015

After leaving Buckden, the morning was some pretty desolate and atmospheric walking, during which I hardly saw a soul, reminding me somewhat of the opening scene of An American Werewolf in London.

The altitude dropped for the afternoon portion of the walk.

Nappa Hall

I stopped in the Askrigg marketplace to eat my lunch (I think, a cheese and pickle sandwich).  While sitting there a number of police cars with sirens wailing raced past.

Continuing onward, when I finally got to Skell Gill the laneway was blocked by 4 police cars and an ambulance outside of a nearby farmhouse.  I cautiously picked my way past and carried on, unaware (until I returned in 2019) what the emergency was about, although my mind was conjuring mass murder, of course.

In Hawes I purchased a map from an unfriendly couple in a newsagents, then carried on to Hardraw for my accommodation for the night, skipping a short section of the trail, as in the morning I would shortcut along a couple of roads to rejoin it north of Hawes.

I had the bunkhouse to myself, however the owners were in the adjacent house.  I headed to the local pub, the Green Dragon Inn, for dinner.  It was rather dark and odd.  I recall entering a hallway and trying to open a door on the left, without luck.  I wandered further in, not finding anyone.  I eventually came back to that same door, tried harder to open it, and managing to do so, which led into a small, low-ceilinged pub room.  Some of the occupants were muttering about how the door handle had rattled back and forth a few times a few minutes prior, and how there might be a ghost wandering the building.  I did not have the heart to tell them that it would have been my attempt at opening the door before wandering around.

I must admit, having the bunkhouse to myself was kind of odd, but this was a good experience as I would have the same place all to myself again on two separate occasions during 2019.
