Dales Way 2018 Day 5

Monday 6th August 2018 Kendal

Breakfast was at 8:30 so I didn’t get away until 9.  The morning wasn’t too bad.

A fairy door?

Somewhere near this ruined barn I went massively wrong

At a point after Crosdale Beck (see the picture above), I became “misplaced” as Mark would say (he believes you can’t get lost in the U.K.).  After somehow getting onto a road, and following that for quite some time until passing a couple of farm houses, then heading down through some paddocks straight back to the river and hurdling a few fences, I found my way back on to the path eventually, but mentally it reduced my enjoyment of the walk for a while.

After the Crook ‘o’ Lune bridge rain began to drizzle, so the camera was kept away for a while, but there was a couple of people following me for a bit there, so I increased my pace to leave them behind.

Also, somehow, I had calculated today’s walk as 20km or so plus a bit to get into Kendal at the end, but in total it was closer to 40km.  Duh, that’ll teach me to double check all distances in the future.

Upon arriving in Kendal I wasted time by heading out to the B&B, where the host had to explain EVERYTHING to me, which was on the outskirts of the town, then walked across town to the Wetherspoons for a burger, fries, and cider for £7.59.  Kettlewell pubs could learn a thing or two about prices from this chain.  After a second cider it was back to the B&B to sit in the guest lounge, as that was the best place to access the Wi-Fi, but not the best place to avoid the hovering host.

Also, of note, other than one time on the Ridgeway when I wore cotton socks one day, I have not had any blisters walking, until today; I have a couple of big ones on my left foot.  I’m suspecting it’s the new boots (which are a little large).
